Chapter 29 – Strong women cry too.
'Matilda, this is Sabrina. You should trust the new maid. I sent her over.' Sabrina texted her best friend. A few days had passed and Devin was able to get a suitable undercover agent with Martin's help. When Sabrina received the news which was via text message, she was excited and quickly texted her best friend.1
'Okay, thanks for telling me,' Matilda responded within a few seconds.
'She is a former agent so she would arrange for your escape when the coast is clear,' Sabrina explained further via the same text message.
'Thank you, Sabrina, you have no idea what this means to me. If this is successful, can you help to clear my name? It's the only way my dad would not be ashamed of me.'
'Don't worry, everything will soon be fine,' Sabrina texted back. She was certain that Devin would help to clear Matilda's name but since no improvement was made in that line, she did not want to make promises yet.
"Sabrina, are you paying attention?" Her father Cobby asked, annoyed about how she was distracted with her phone. Sabrina dropped the phone after her last test and turned her attention to her father. They were having a weekly meeting concerning the profit of the company.
"Yes. I understand that production is slow because demand is low as well."
"So, what do you suggest we do about it?" Cobby probed seriously. He already had a plan but two heads are better than one.
"I will draw up a new marketing strategy to help boost the demand for jewelry. I also want to use Martin Dane's support at the birthday party of the Borough President. We intend to act as a fake couple," Sabrina revealed, her father frowned imperceptibly.
"I don't like Martin. There is just something fishy about him but your brother trusts him a lot. Just be careful around him, Brina. You have always been smart but I think you are too smart in this industry with just a week's work experience. You seem to know quite a lot," he observed and spoke.
Since he did not have proof of the accusation against Martin, the best he could do was warn his daughter. Sabrina already considered that fact and did not counter it. She went on to explain,
"I've been reading a lot and Devin has been helping too. Most times when I can't sleep, I decide to read instead of shedding tears for a man who isn't worth it." Her voice broke at the last part and she fought to hold back her tears. Her father stared pitifully at her,
"You have lost so much. Did you do a general health check last time?" He asked as concern laced his voice. Sabrina had made some serious sacrifices for Robin which he feared might affect her health.
"Yes, and everything is fine dad, it was a long time ago and there are no problems," Sabrina assured him.
"I'm glad to hear that. This is all my fault," Cobby was suddenly remorseful again, considering how he used Sabrina to get the partnership. Whereas Sabrina saw nothing wrong with her father's arrangement in the past and could not allow him to carry the blame alone.
"I wanted it too. I was too desperate and obsessed with him. I should have left when you told me to but I was hoping that he'd change," she said sadly, her eyes glistening with tears which she refused to allow to run down her cheeks. Her father shook his head.
"Remember to let it out if you feel like it. If you keep it inside, you would go crazy and your heart would suffer the weight. Strong women cry too and it's not a shame. It only means that they are strong enough to let go," Cobby squeezed her hand. Sabrina lost control of her emotions.
"But it would make him feel like he won. Have you seen the news about the lies he allowed his mistress to spread about me?" Sabrina choked on tears and her father walked around to comfort her. He sat on his desk and laid her head on his lap, while she cried out the pain she held inside.
"I saw it too, Brina, but you endured so much before this. News about Robin with women has never been new," he stroked her hair gently while allowing her warm tears to wet his pants. Sabrina was shivering from pain, as she continued to analyze the gravity of the situation.
"But none of them came out with an engagement ring and pregnancy. She's now his fiancé."
Her father shook his head whilst continuously stroking her hair like he used to do when she was younger. "See, you are still in pain. Let it out, Sabrina. Let it go. Only then would you feel better? Only then, will you be free."
Sabrina was a crying mishmash and at one point, her wails could be heard outside her father's office but he did not try to stop her, just holding her in his arms, while she cried her heart out. After what felt like forever, she dozed off a little, before being jolted awake by a knock on the door.
"Mr. James, Mr. Dane is here to see Miss James," Cobby's secretary announced, while her eyes narrowed at the wetness on her boss's shirt. Seeing Sabrina's swollen and red eyes, she could tell that the woman had been crying but was lost as to why. When Cobby gave a nod, she stepped out and closed the door behind her.
"Thank you, Dad I will leave now," Sabrina wiped her tears with a tissue and blew her nose before rising to her feet after discarding the used tissue in a bin. It was good she did not use any makeup today since she was late and in a hurry after having overslept.
"Be careful Sabrina, find out about his handicapped sister," Cobby said thoughtfully, Sabrina froze at the revelation.
"Handicapped sister? Does Devin know about it?" She asked skeptically. Her father stood up and walked back to his swivel chair.
"I don't think so."
Sabrina frowned as chaos muddied her mind. It was no shame for one to have a handicapped sister but why did it seem like Martin was secretive about it and why did Devin not know? "Why did you not tell him?" She asked Cobby, who let out a bitter smile.
