Something was broken and couldn't be fixed…

That was what the ugly side of bearing responsibilities looked like.

Probably because Iris stared at him too intensely, the alpha opened his eyes feeling her heated gaze. Those eyes were very alert, as if he had not slept at all, which startled her.

For a moment, time seemed to freeze. Both of them just stared at each other and Cane's dark eyes looked very lucid. Did he even fall asleep earlier?

His arms were still wrapped around her hips and their chests were pressed together, thus she could feel his heartbeat, so could he.

Time seemed to stop and there seemed to be nothing else to think about. They only had each other in their eyes.

But then, Iris saw how his brows knitted together. He was unhappy, maybe because his sleep was disrupted.

Out of instinct, Iris raised her hand and caressed the furrow between his brows with her fingers gently. She thought he would swat her hand away for touching him. She heard he hated it when someone touched him, but he didn't, instead, this made the alpha lower his gaze.

Iris then became so bold, as she moved her hand around gingerly and patted his head. She remembered she did this that night and Cane fell asleep almost immediately.

She was thrilled, she had never thought that she would be allowed to touch him like this. The feeling was surreal, this was almost like she was facing two different personalities of his.

It was a magical moment, where he allowed someone to be so close to him and let them touch him. A rare moment, when he lowered his guard and showed a little bit of his vulnerable side.

Gradually, his eyes closed and his breathing evened out, as he fell asleep again.

Though this was not the first time that she managed to put him to sleep, Iris was still amazed that she could actually do that.

"I hope you are no longer in pain," Iris said in a small voice and closed her eyes as well.

Her hand fell out of rhythm when she fell asleep, as her hand rested on the side of his face.

Because there was nothing else that they needed to do in the black market, the next night they planned to return to Arleen city, back to the same inn they stayed in when they arrived here for the first time, where Ethan had been waiting for them.

But for now, they decided to stay in the same inn until the night came, thus they could cross the desert.

Meanwhile, Iris was too sleepy, she was dog tired after she learned how to ride a horse the whole day with Redmond. She was not as painful as the first time she rode a horse, but still, her stamina couldn't be compared to those shifters, who could run around even after a long journey.

Right now, she was lying on the bed, trying to take a nap, but couldn't sleep for long.

From the window in her room, she was able to see the luminous night pearls embedded in the cave's ceiling, casting golden light to every corner. It was a tranquil and peaceful time.

But then, she saw a man, standing outside the window. He was wearing white shirt and a pair of black pants, his eyes were so green, like moss.

Their eyes met and Iris was stunned, because she didn't know what to do, since everything happened so fast when the man entered the room and approached her.

He lifted the window glass and entered the room, his steps were so light like feathers, as if he was floating above the ground, instead of walking.

The golden hue from the luminous pearls fell on his golden hair and it was a beautiful sight. Iris would have been entranced and enjoyed what she was seeing if it was not for the fact that this man was a stranger, who barged into her bedroom.

"Who are you!?" Iris shrieked, she immediately got off the bed and glared at him, but the man only blinked his eyes and stopped walking, as if her fear made him hesitant to come closer to her.

"Who are you? What are you doing here?" Iris asked, her voice full of wary, as she kept glancing at the door. She would run out of this room at the first chance, she knew that Cane and the others were just in the room next to hers.

The man stared at her for a long time without saying anything, his eyes looking at her body up and down, but it was not a lewd gaze, more like he was trying to find something in her body, scrutinizing her.2

He didn't move from his position, but Iris tried to move closer to the door, but then in a flash, he was already standing right in front of her.

He cupped her face and stared into her eyes closely. He was so close, she could feel his warm breath fanning her face. Iris was about to raise her leg to kick him, but then, his green eyes flickered to the door and his figure disappeared in the blink of an eye.

A second later, Cane entered the room and frowned when he saw Iris standing with a blanched expression, as if she just saw a ghost.

"What happened?" He looked around the room and picked up a strange scent in the air. "Someone was here." That was not a question, but a statement.
