HE WAS A MONSTER
Cane was well aware that he shouldn't direct his anger at Iris, since he watched everything and how Lou was the intruder, yet he couldn't get rid of this intrusive thought in his mind. 1
He had not yet gotten any sleep for two days straight, a lot of things happened in that span of time, which drained him emotionally and physically, but when he was looking for a shred of peace that could calm him down for a while, Iris brought up another problem for him to solve.
It was too much, he felt like he was reaching his limit.
"I didn't meet him on purpose…" Iris said in small voice, she was about to cry to prove her innocent. She was desperate to make him believed her, because she didn't want Cane looked at her with those judgmental gazes as well.
Even though she had never mentioned it, not even to Hanna, but it was so terrifying to be under those people's judgment about her.
Cane gritted his teeth, but he didn't say anything and this terrified Iris even more, because the last time that she provoked him and made him angry, he hurt her. Would he do that again to her now? Even though he had apologized for that?
A tear escaped Iris's eyes, despite her effort to fight it back. Mason always got even angrier whenever she was crying. He would say how ugly she was and how useless a woman, who only knew how to cry. How useless she was…
"I am sorry… I am sorry…" she was afraid that Cane would hurt her. He could do that and if he decided to do it, no one would be able to stop him.
She shouldn't have confronted him in the first place. She should have let him to hug her silently every night. At the very least, in that way, he didn't hurt her. She shouldn't have tried to have a conversation about the unspoken between them.
She shouldn't have antagonized him when he was already had too much in his shoulder to carry and a lot of trouble that was thrown his way.
The night became darker out there and snow started to fall again, made the temperature dropped even colder.
Cane closed his eyes and leaned forward to rest his head against her shoulder. Her scent overwhelmed him and he could feel her body stiffened with his touch. She was afraid that he would hurt her and he understood that.
Iris thought, Cane would start his assault. She closed her eyes, accepting her fate, but then she felt him moved away from her and when she opened her eyes, Cane had gone, leaving her alone there.
Tears started to stream down her cheeks one by one, as small sobs escaped her lips. It was not sure whether it was because of relief or pain that she felt, as the sight of his retreating back looked very desolated. It stabbed her heart in a way that she didn't think was possible to feel this hurt.
She was the one, who was in predicament a few second ago, but why she was the one in agony to see him? There was this feeling that she couldn't understand, where she felt for him.
Iris wiped her tears away immediately and stopped herself from crying. It took a while, but finally she could stop the tears, as she rubbed her swollen eyes, so she she wouldn't cry again, before she walked out of the bathroom and the sight of Cane almost made Iris screamed, but she stopped herself in time.
"What happened?!" Iris rushed toward Cane.
The dark wisp was not only coming from his palms right now, but his whole body. It almost looked like black smoke obscured his figure.
Iris didn't think twice before she ran toward him, while Cane had this blank expression on his face. He stared at the dark wisp that surrounded him.
This was it. There was not helping it.
All hopes sucked out of his mind when he watched this wild wisp swirled in the air. It grew bigger. It would fill the whole room sooner and someone would know.
All of his plans to protect his people and give them a better life that they deserved would vanish, the moment someone knew about it. Once this fact reached the king's ears, it would be the end of everything.
Cane didn't fear death, he would gladly accept that, since what life offered to him was only pain and agony. He was suffered because he couldn't die. Because those people relied on him heavily. Their blind faith on him felt like a curse now. A curse that forced him to keep going, though he wanted to stop. He wanted this to end.
Gerald was right. He was still that helpless and hopeless boy, who knew nothing. His degrading and demeaning words rang in his ears again. It was so easy to believe it now.
Cane fell to his knees. His expression didn't change, as his dark eyes stared at the dark wisp that blanketed him. What would happen then? Would this wisp kill him? Was it poisonous?
He was so tired. He had reached his limit.
But then, Cane saw that auburn hair that blurred his line of sight and felt Iris's body pressed against him. She hugged him so tightly, her curls tickled his face and her scent was comforting. She had her lips against his neck, which surprisingly didn't repulse him.
Her body felt so cold, probably because she was out there for long time and this didn't sit well with him.
Out of instinct, Cane stretched out his hand and hugged her back, he buried his face against the crooked of her shoulder.
Wasn't she afraid of him? He could see tears and fear in her eyes. He knew what she was thinking he was going to do to her and the thought disgusted him.
Cane felt like he was no longer a victim, but a monster instead.
