TALK TO ME WITH RESPECT
"Was it the king, who sent you here?" Cane asked. "If you want to find your grandson faster, you need to actively get involved in this case." 0
Like usual, Cane didn't waste anyone time by talking in roundabout manner, he didn't even let Koda to get angry at him first because he had been neglecting his duty for two days, as Iris was sick.
On the other hand, Koda narrowed his eyes, his lips pressed into thin line. "Do you want to say I didn't actively get involved enough?"
"Yes."
Koda was stunned by the bluntness that Cane showed to him. Shouldn't he be apologetic for how he handled the situation? He should beg for his forgiveness! Not only he ignored the king's order to call him back to the palace, but he also had the audacity to say he didn't contribute in this case!
As the former beta of the Red Claw pack, his ego was so high, Koda felt he was being insulted. "Ridiculous!" He slammed his hand on the table, so hard, the water spilled from the glass, yet Cane didn't even flinch, he met Koda's eyes squarely. "You are the one, who had been coddling with your mate and neglected your duty, you even dared to turn down the summon from the king, but it's me, who didn't actively get involved?!"
King Aeon was furious when Cane only said his mate was sick and he needed to be with her, as he rejected his summon, but the king couldn't do anything, since he put all the important responsibility in this critical situation on the alpha, not to mention about the thing that they discussed behind the close door about the Asturi Stem and the Celestial Moon pack.
King Aeon was infuriated by the way Cane took advantage of the situation and did thing as he pleased.
"You have arrived for more than a week, but what have you done aside from pestering the king to deploy more men? And demanded to make it more public?" Cane looked relax, not even once he showed fear when he faced this furious former beta. "Not even once you joined in the search team, though you brought your own warrior with you."
"That's your job to do it!" Koda roared. He didn't like to be blamed.
"And I have done my job."
"By coddling your mate?" Koda scoffed derisively. He didn't even try to show some respect toward Cane, although he had higher rank between the two of them, as he was the alpha. "Are you in rush to get her pregnant?" He must have heard about the deadline the king had given to Cane.
However, Cane was unfazed by that insult, he still looked so calm when he spoke, but his words filled with venom. "You are talking to an alpha, the king special's envoy. Insulting me means you insult the king as well. I can have you killed right now and the king will not be able to do anything."
"I want to see you will do it."
"Haven't you heard about the golden stamp I received?" With the golden stamp, his power was only a second best from the king himself.
"Do you want to make the whole Red Claw pack an enemy?" Once again, Koda slammed his hand on the table and this made a visible crack on the surface, still it didn't bothered Cane. The beta stood up and showed his imposing figure.
"Will you believe me if I said the king will be very glad to battle your pack if I gave him an excuse to do that?"
"Nonsense!"
"He lost control over the magic stone mines in the Howling Wolf pack and Blue Moon pack, do you think he doesn't have his eyes on your pack?" Cane's lips tugged upward.
"We are the richest pack! Do you really think he can take down our pack easily?!" Koda barked. "You are slave! You will forever be a slave! You will never understand how the power play in this realm!"
Koda was completely wrong about this one particular thing, because Cane knew better how the power play in this realm and he was only another chess piece in his board to get back to the king for what he had done to his pack.
"You are the richest pack, that's true. But, don't you think it's the more enticing factor for other pack to eye Red Claw pack? More so, as long as I remember, your pack is not the strongest."
If the king really determined to get the Red Claw pack wrapped around his fingers, he needed the right excuse and Cane would be happily provided one for him.
That's what Cane meant in his words and Koda understood that. This was a show of power play indeed.
"Are you trying to threatening me?!"
"No. I am only telling you, that's what happened ten years ago." Both of them knew how greedy the royal family was. "Maybe you need to be taught as a slave to be able to listen more carefully." Cane smiled, but this was the kind of smile that didn't reach his dark eyes at all, while Koda was trying to hold back his rage.
After all, Koda was only a former beta, he couldn't move the whole pack and the current alpha in the Red Claw pack would likely sacrifice him rather than offended the royal and had an open war with them.
"Now you can sit down and talk to me with respect, or we can go to the hardest choice." Cane waved his hand, indicating Koda to sit down again. "This discussion has strayed too far from the main problem."
Koda was fumed, he was mad, but as an older man, who had his fair share in this kind of battle, he knew it was not wise to follow his anger.
Though he was enraged and was only a breath away from shifting into his beast and attacked the alpha before him, he chose the former option.
A sinister smile tugged on the corner of Cane's lips when he saw this and now, they could have the real conversation.
Cane didn't talk much, he simply pulled out something from his pocket and placed it on the table between them.
It was a small and shiny object, a ring.
"What is this?" Koda frowned to see the ring, as he picked it up from the table.
Cane then started his narration. He talked smoothly without any stumble, as if he was feeding Koda with the truth.
The more the former beta listened to it, the more his face turned darker.
==============================
In the yard, you could hear the sound of children were still playing. It was not night yet and they were still full of vigor.
But then, Cane found something that made his blood boiled.
In the middle of the yard, he saw the lazy ass white bear, sprawling on the covered- snow ground, while the children climbed on its big body, laughing happily, yet the creature was too lazy to shake them off.
At this point, it looked more like overgrown puppy instead of a beast!
But, if this dummy creature was here, he must be here too!
