IRIS WAS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT CANE'S PLAN

1Ethan had told him about a lot of things, he had emphasized how the warriors had warmed up to Iris and how she helped them to read and write, they saw her in new light now, especially when the relationship between her and their alpha turned out so great. 

Cane showed how important she was and it was not the first time for him to stay with Iris when she was not feeling well. The alpha even brought her with him almost wherever he went, even for the secret meeting. 

Yet, Jace simply couldn't wrap the idea Cane took this relationship with Iris seriously, aside from him needing her because of the Blue Moon pack. 

Not to mention with the warriors. 

They didn't state it bluntly, but definitely, Iris was not their favorite luna. If there was someone else, they would rather choose the other person than this daughter of Gerald, because seeing her brought back a lot of bad memories. 

They accepted Iris only because their respect to their alpha, nothing else. Most of the warriors back in the Howling Wolf pack had the same sentiment like this, but the warriors that followed to the capital city looked like they had different thought now. 

Last night, Jace overheard a warrior bragged about how he could write and read because of Iris. 

Jace flustered. 

This entourage arrived at a vast area, where there were a lot of people, covered in dirt and dust. They looked so skinny, as if they only had skin and bone left in their body. 

"Who are they?" Iris asked, she and Hanna stared at Ethan, waiting for his explanation, since he had been walking with them. 

"They are all shifters. They must have been drinking Rottingbane, which prevented them from shifting into their beast."

"What are they doing here?" Hanna asked again with so much curiosity. 

They had this kind of place in the Blue Moon and Howling Wolf pack, but it was because they were working in the magic stone mine, while here, there was no place like that, so what were they doing here?

"Riverside pack didn't have magic stone mine, but they have been working on a crosscut between Riverside pack and Chrystal Moon pack. Alpha Gill wanted to make a tunnel by digging the feet of the Goffa mountain, so they will be able to cut down two days journey from this pack to the Chrystal Moon pack."

Chrystal Moon pack, Diandem pack, Bloody Wolf pack and Silver River pack were on the other side of this mountain, so it was indeed a good thinking to make a shortcut by creating a tunnel under the mountain to cut the journey to the other pack. 

"But, isn't it dangerous? Goffa mountain is full with a lot of monsters, especially at time like this." After winter, the monsters were very active, Iris knew that much about it. 

"Yes, that's why, this project has not yet accomplished even after five years when it started."

"Five years?" Iris was dumbstruck.

"Hm. Can you imagine how many people had died? Have you realized? There are a lot of children?"

Iris didn't realize that, but she indeed saw a lot of children more than usual on the street. 

"Alpha Gill had this sick idea to make the women gives birth to a lot of children in order to replace the people, who died here." Ethan's eyes turned dangerous when he spoke again. "Alpha Gill took all little girls, who are in the age of being able to get pregnant to the pack house. We found a lot of pregnant girls around the age of fifteen to seventeen, all of them were pregnant."

They found them after they executed the five alphas. This shocking revelation barely touched the surface of the depth of their heinous and abhorrent activities. 

Hanna clutched her chest. "How do you know that? You just arrived." She frowned with Ethan's ability to gather so much information in such short period of time. 

Ethan smiled smugly at her, which made Hanna regretted to ask. "Of course, because I am so capable of gathering information!"

Hanna and Redmond rolled their eyes at that comment. "You know that much because you spent your time gossiping with that beta last night," Redmond said disdainfully. 

"That's what you call exchanging information!" Ethan retorted. 

When the two of them started bickering again, Cane took Iris's hand and walked with her, while Oliver talked something with alpha Dristan and Koda were roaming around this area. 

This vast land almost the same like magic stone mine, but they were so close with Goffa mountain, where Iris could see the tunnel Ethan had mentioned before. 

"Cane…" Iris tugged his sleeve to get his attention. "What are you going to do with these people? You will stop this, right? They could all die because of this impossible project."

Cane looked at his mate and shook his head. "No. I will continue this." He could see the surprise crossed her expression. "Creating this tunnel to make a short cut to the other pack indeed the only good idea alpha Gill had."

"But, Cane… what about these people? You know the monster will be so active at this period of time, right?" Iris was so anxious. She knew she didn't need to remind Cane about this fact, since he must well aware about it more than her. 

"Right."

"They could die."

Cane stared at his mate for a while. "I will never promise to be responsible for everyone's life. I will never be able to fulfill that promise, neither I am going to try."

Iris was shocked to learn about that and just like what Cane thought, she was still that softhearted woman, despite what happened to her, but then she narrowed her eyes. 

"What are you planning to do?" 

Cane could see how she was trying so hard to figure it out. "Guess."

Iris frowned and she was indeed trying to think of what Cane had planned for these people that could benefit him.
