SHE COULD LISTEN TO HIM FOR HOURS

Iris was dumbfounded to read what Cane said. She was utterly speechless. Was he being cunning to her too? 

"You kissed me!" Iris insisted with her reason, but she couldn't elaborate further, as her face turned bright red. Probably, it was because of the sunlight…

"I have done that several times."

"Are you being… ingenious with me?" Iris asked sullenly, since she didn't know how to call him out for tricking her with a kiss without sounded weird. 

"You need to learn how to compose yourself." Cane brushed her bangs and caressed her rosy cheek. "You are being so easy to read."

People around them watched this interaction and how gentle the alpha from the Howling Wolf pack was to his mate. In their mind, someone, who was capable of executing the five alphas and treated their bodies so cruelly after that, wouldn't have a gentle bone in their body, neither they would be able to find in themselves to be kind.

Yet, what they were witnessing right now was something that completely different from what they imagined…

While they were receiving all the things that they needed, such food and clean clothes, the alpha and the luna were being affectionate toward each other. The alpha treated her so respectful and he did it naturally. It was unheard of a man in his position to treat their woman so well, especially when the woman had not yet conceived with their child after all this time. 

Not to mention the dark story behind the two of them…

"Don't you think he is being overly affectionate with the woman?" alpha Dristan asked Koda, as the two of them stood out of an earshot. 

"Hm. it's not normal," Koda replied, his eyes fixed on Cane, who was smiling at his mate, who looked sullen. They didn't know what they were talking about, but from their standing point, it looked like the alpha was being playful with his luna. "Knowing him, he must be up to something."

The two of them agreed that the alpha from the Howling Wolf pack was too cunning, they couldn't lower their guard, or else, it would be them, who became the sacrifice in whatever plan he had in his mind. Alpha Dristan didn't completely trust Cane, so did Koda. 

After all, there was no such complete trust between the alpha of different pack. It was so naïve, if you thought such thing existed. 

Heart could change and there was no such thing as loyalty that lasted forever in this realm, there was only benefit and self interest, and greater than that was a pack's chance to profit. 

All of them knew that and even those poor five alphas understood to a certain level. 

"Is that really a bad thing to be easily read?" Iris asked, as they walked toward the tunnel, while people either avoided them or they lowered their head submissively, didn't want to provoke the alpha. 

"In this battle, yes. You don't want your enemy to know what is in your mind or how you are feeling upon a certain situation." Cane was exceptionally chatty today, as he explained things to her. Something that she should learn, something that she should remember, something that she should do. 

Iris frowned, but then she stood in front of Cane, forcing him to stop walking. For a moment, she only stared at him, but he could see how a lot of questions swirled inside pretty head of hers. 

"How can you easily read people? How do you know what their motives? You seem to be able to be two or three steps ahead of them." Iris was still fascinated by how Cane could advance this far within less than a year since he freed himself and his people from the slavery. 

Would it possible if their pack never fell into a slavery if he was the alpha at that time? Cane was only a little bit older than Iris's age right now when their pack fell into her father's hand. 

Cane smiled softly at her question. If it was someone else, he wouldn't waste his breathe to answer such question. "I don't know their motive, Iris. I pay close attention to their personality."

Iris furrowed her brows. "How so?"

"People tend to use themselves as a measuring stick for viewing others. It will be easy to predict the next move of a person who behaved rationally and was motivated by something, you need to pay close attention to what motivate them, it will be either power, money, woman… there must be something that move them. Even the action of people who is purely motivated by their emotions could be easily guessed after a careful observation." Cane tapped the tip of her nose. "Observe your surroundings more."

Iris felt her mind swirled, she had never thought in that way. If Cane said people tended to use themselves as a measuring stick for viewing others, it rang a bell in her mind, because she did exactly that. 

Meanwhile, Cane could see how Iris was starting to grasp what he was saying, thus he didn't bother her when she was deep in her own thought and took her hand to continue walking. 

"Have you never been afraid before?"

"Of course, I have." Cane stared at her. 

"How can you pretend that you are not?"

"My father told me this; weakness is a guise, wear it when you need to use it for your own benefit, but never when you feel it." Cane chuckled lightly, but there was no humor in it. "In the end of the day, all of this is about profit."

Iris didn't realize this before, but right now, she felt like she would never get tired of talking with Cane, as if she could talk to him all day and they wouldn't run out of a topic, or she could listen to him for hours without being tired. 

And here, she remembered something. "I saw it." Her expression darkened.  0

"Hm? What did you see?" Cane asked.
