JOURNEY TO THE HOWLING PACK (4)
When the battle finally ended, it was almost dawn and they couldn't reach the Howling Wolf pack before sunset. The attack of the goblins and trolls delayed them because there were so many victims in the commoners and also a few in the warriors.0
Though there were no casualties, they still needed time to recover, especially the children. Because their healing ability was still developing, they couldn't heal from the injuries as fast as the adult shifters.
"Find a place that can be used as shelter during the storm." Cane looked up at the dark sky. Rain was still pouring down heavily. They couldn't continue this journey in such weather. Their best bet was to find a shelter until the storm passed.
"On it," Jace and Ethan replied, as both of them immediately dispersed their subordinates to find a suitable place for this large entourage to take shelter.
They couldn't find a cave in this butte, but there were huge rocks surrounding them, which they could use as a cover during the storm.
Meanwhile, Cane asked Will to take a few people to check their surroundings, just in case there would be an ambush again.
"Right away, Alpha." He moved fast, because the gloomy sky and how the wind howled between the rocks told them they would be in a dire situation if they were to be ambushed again.
From afar, Grace had already moved to check on the injured people with the other twenty healers.
"I don't think there will be another ambush," Redmond said, as he approached Cane. He didn't want to address him as the alpha, but he had to keep it civil with him, since he was the mate of his luna.
Cane just spared him a glance, but he didn't say anything. He knew this attack was most likely a rare occasion because of the migration. It would be winter in two months.
However, it was better to be safe than sorry.
"I am going to see my luna and make sure your people didn't neglect her during the attack," Redmond answered the unspoken question from Cane, since he stared at him for following him to the head of the party.
Cane still said nothing. He was bound to Iris and unless Iris betrayed him, this man wouldn't be able to do anything against her wish.
With that thought, Cane furrowed his brows, as a question that bothered him dawned on him. Did he completely trust her?
In the distance, Cane could see Iris sitting together with Hanna and a young guard that he believed his name was Joel, since he was a constant presence whenever he saw Ethan.
"Are you okay? Are you hurt somewhere?"
Cane almost threw the person that pounced on him all of a sudden, especially when his mind was elsewhere, but when he sensed Aria's familiar scent, he relaxed a bit.
"I am fine." Cane took a step back to avoid her touch, she looked hurt, but she knew how it was with him. "Are you hurt?"
"No, but I was so scared when those things appeared out of nowhere!" Aria pointed at the carcass of a troll. His head had been decapitated from his body and because of the rain, they couldn't burn the body.
However, they still needed to do it as soon as possible, before those bodies turned into ghouls.
"Stay inside your carriage, it is raining. Keep yourself warm." Cane nodded at Aria's carriage, near where Bian and Dalia could be seen standing. All of them were drenched in this rain.
Aria wanted to protest and pull him to stay inside the carriage with her, but the alpha had already walked away from her.
After saying that, Cane walked ahead to approach Iris. He needed to know why she didn't stay inside her carriage and roamed around carelessly instead.
"Why aren't you in your carriage?" Cane asked Iris, who was sitting on a rock, with Hanna, Joel and Redmond surrounding her.
Iris lifted her head and squinted her eyes because this rain made it hard for her to see.
"Her carriage is destroyed." It was Joel, who explained the situation and how Iris almost got injured when four goblins attacked her. "But, I saved her in time!" The young guard looked pleased at himself for what he had done.
"Thank you for your bravery, Joel," Iris said with a bright smile, even on this gloomy rainy night, she still exuded warmth in her eyes.
Joel's eyes lit up, as he said timidly. "You have thanked me enough, Luna Iris."
"I will find you another carriage." Cane then looked at Redmond. "Come with me, I want your man to patrol around the area."
Redmond threw a nasty look at the alpha. What did he mean by he needed his men to patrol in this horrible weather? Even a creature as stupid as troll wouldn't go around and terrorize people during the storm.
"I don't take orders from you," Redmond said simply, as he turned to Iris, who was shocked to read such a defiant answer from him, yet the alpha didn't change his expression at all.
After all, Cane knew that Redmond was only trying to get on his nerves and he wouldn't give him what he wanted.
"You need to follow his order," Iris said in a small voice, but it was enough for them to hear. "You don't need to ask me first."
"I serve you, luna." Redmond nodded his head politely.
However, right at that time, Stone came to the alpha. His expression was ghastly as he dismounted from his horse with Ania in his arms.
"Alpha, I need to continue this journey alone," he said in panic.
"You can't go. There will be a storm." As he spoke, the howling wind and rain became even more brutal.
"No, I can't wait," Stone said helplessly. "Ania, my daughter, was poisoned during the battle. The healers don't have the remedy for her and can't heal her because this is something that they didn't know."
"What do you mean they don't know?" Cane frowned.
