Finger licking good
There were many activities in the funhouse, bringing out Sebastian's competitiveness. After losing the game of Balloon Blaster against Heaven, Sebastian took the initiative in other games. They tried all sorts of things like "human bowling," where they rode a wrecking ball and crashed into human-sized bowling pins. 2
They explored every room and completed challenges. Sebastian would sometimes be tough on his mother, but she excelled at the spy game of dodging laser beams. Both of them especially enjoyed that room, triggering their imagination that they were truly spies. Another one was the slam dunk, where they get slimed in their protective gears, and then shooting games with slimes as their ammo.
It was exhausting, to say the least, but overall… fun.
Sebastian never heard his mother laugh so loud and free, and he never heard himself giggle as well. Today was the first time he had laughed until his stomach hurt. It was also the first time he felt adventurous in trying things out.
They didn't even notice how long it has been since they came to this place.
"See? I told you. There's nothing to worry about. We won't waste food." Heaven winked at Sebastian as they sat on the bench inside the mall, snacking their takeouts from the bakeshop after an exhausting activity.
"Did you purposely choose to have desserts galore to make us hyper?" asked Sebastian after biting on the cookie. "That only explains our burst of energy in that place."
Heaven grinned. "You're overestimating your mother. I didn't have such plans in mind, but it turned out helpful."
"What a coincidence." Sebastian didn't think much anymore as he munched on their snacks. Glancing at her, Heaven was eating their snacks happily. He felt a bit tired, but he could still feel his mother's high energy just looking at that satisfaction plastered on her face.
"Did you have fun?" he asked after several seconds of silence.
"Hm?" Her brows rose as she faced him squarely. "Of course. I felt like this was the best day of my life. I never had so much fun this way."
The best day of her life…his cheeks turned a little pinkish at her remarks.
"How about you? Did you have fun? Or did you regret agreeing to come with me?"
"I… it was fun." Sebastian relaxed his stiff shoulders while holding her gaze. "I never had so much fun, ever."
Her grin turned blinding at his answer. "Did your perception about playgrounds change?"
"It did." Sebastian looked away from her as he added, "I realized it wasn't the place, but the person I'm with is what deterred me from enjoying such places."
Satisfaction washed over her face as her eyes softened, staring at his side profile. It wasn't a lie when she said she had fun; it was probably the best day of her two lifetimes. After all, she used to want to go to funhouses or a simple playground when she was a little girl herself. She wanted to meet other kids, build a short friendship, and play with kids her age.
However, her life was never normal. Even though her parents took her to playgrounds, it was usually just her, her parents, and their countless bodyguards. She cherished those moments, of course, but it was still different from what she wanted.
Her situation and this boy might be different, but she was glad to give what this child needed.
"Basti," she called affectionately, planting her hand on top of his head. "Thank you for coming with Mommy today, and giving me a chance to show you that I can also be good."
Surprise took place on his countenance almost immediately, staring at her face with slightly dilated eyes. His cheek felt hotter, sensing this genuine care in her eyes. Although Heaven had always been sincere, the look in her eyes went crashing into the protective walls of his innocent heart.
"I really had fun today," she added sincerely. "Let's do this again next time. What do you think?"
His heart warmed up at the thought of a second date. "Sure."
"Hehe." Heaven ruffled his hair playfully before fixing them again. "Go eat your snacks. We can walk around for a while before going home. Gosh. I didn't notice it was already seven — we should be having dinner now."
"How about we have dinner instead?" he suggested, warranting a strange look from her.
"Should we do that?" she lowered her head as if mentally telling him to say yes.
"Mhm." Sebastian nodded. "I don't see the reason we shouldn't. It's getting late, after all. It is only wise to eat here, so once we get home, we'll just have to take a shower and go to bed."
"Make sense." Heaven nodded in understanding. "Then, shall we go? Where do you want to eat? Any particular dish you're craving."
"Whatever you like."
"KFC?"
"KFC?" Sebastian cocked his head to the side while deep lines appeared between his mother's brows.
"You don't know it?" she gasped.
"What's that?"
"My gosh…" Heaven covered her lips to hide her dismay, but then again, it only made sense.
Sebastian was the first in his generation. Therefore, everyone in the family took special care of him. They even had a chef and a nutritionist working together for the young master's meal. It wouldn't be surprising that junk food never touched his tongue.
'I feel like a careless mother,' she realized as she thought of taking him to a popular fast food chain. 'I shouldn't take him to those sorts of food chains, since it's very unhealthy.'
"It's a fast food restaurant — finger licking good!" In contrast to her thoughts, her mouth run off as if she was trying to sell a product. "It's really good. You should try it."
'Stupid, stupid, stupid damn mouth!' Heaven mentally winced as her remarks sank into her.
"But it's kinda unhealthy," she took it back almost immediately. "Let's try other things since -- "
"I want to try it."
"Huh?"
"At this point, I learned to listen to your suggestions as they seemed to have turned out good," Sebastian explained monotonously. "I want to try this finger licking good chicken you're talking about."
'My dearest Dominic, I am truly sorry,' she expressed in her heart, mentally weeping. 'I think I'm tainting your son a little — just a little, though!'
