[Bonus chapter]Right excuses
The Zhu Family gets together in the old residence a few times a year. It was already a tradition in the family and everyone was often there. Heaven attended to a few of them until she found all sorts of excuses not to. Dominic bought all the excuses she said in the past, not forcing her to go with him. Even so, he would always mention it to her out of formality. 2
To be fair, the immediate family members in the Zhu Family — except Axel — were all welcoming toward Heaven. However, the relatives weren't much. Although they didn't have the cheek to pick on her right in front of Dominic or Grandma Zhu, they would never fail to bring up Dominic's childhood 'sweetheart'.
One could guess what sort of things the original Heaven had to listen to, making her insecurity and negativity grow worse.
It was the very reason Heaven disliked going to this type of event. In other people's eyes, she was nothing but a cunning and ambitious wench who successfully squeezed herself into the upper echelon by using her child.
She was not qualified, to be precise. Or rather, they deemed her a thief, stealing Ivy Wei's position in the family.
Just thinking about dealing with those types of things gave her a headache. Heaven wanted to focus on mending her relationship with her husband and son, but well, dealing with the rest of the family was bound to happen. It was just that it happened earlier than she fathomed.
"Ah!" Heaven winced, snapping back to the current lapse when a slight pain struck her shoulder. She glanced over her shoulder, glaring at the culprit who bit her. "Dom, I'm not vaccinated. Stop biting me."
"But I am, so you won't get rabies," he humored.
"You were distracted." Dominic propped his knuckles against his temple, lying on his side. His hands underneath the blanket were wrapped around her unclad body, pulling her closer to him. "You said you will go to sleep. I don't see you sleeping. Was this about the family gathering?"
Heaven sighed as she rolled until she was facing him. "What do you think?"
"If you don't want to go, don't go. It's not really important," he remarked calmly, eyes fixed on her.
"But Grandma will be sad if we don't."
"She won't."
"How are you sure?"
"If we use the right excuse, she will even suggest we don't go."
Heaven blinked, waiting for a more elaborate explanation, but it didn't come. So she blurted out, "What right excuses?"
"For instance… I'll tell her we're busy growing our family." His smile was short, but it appeared utterly mischievous. "She would probably book a flight for us so we can focus on reproducing."
"..." she should've known.
"Besides, I don't want to go as well."
"Why? Is something the matter?"
Dominic didn't answer as he studied her face. He moved his face closer, planting a peck on her lips.
"Nothing," he whispered to her lips before drawing his head back. Dominic studied her face again, waiting for any reaction after kissing her with no prior notice.
Nothing.
Heaven just looked at him as if what he had done was only a natural thing to do. No hate, no surprise, no nothing. It was as though the enormous gap between them suddenly disappeared overnight and everything they had done just felt natural.
Even their session just now didn't feel forced. It just happened, and before they knew it, all their clothes were on the floor as they rolled under the sheet.
"What? Why are you looking at me like that?" she asked, breaking the prolonged silence between them.
"I'm just still… surprised, that's all."
"Surprise...? About what?"
"Us."
"Oh…"
"It still felt surreal, Heaven." Dominic tightened his embrace, pulling her even closer as if the little gap between their bodies was still too wide. "Just a few days ago, we… don't even talk to each other. But now, we eat, we kiss, and we fuck anytime the call of flesh reaches us. It was unbelievable."
Heaven bit her bottom lip to stop herself from giggling. "Do you dislike it?"
"No." His answer was quick, as he didn't need to think about it. "I like you better now."
'Didn't you like me before?' was what she wanted to ask but restrained herself. At this point, she realized she needed to learn how to bite her tongue.
The past played a huge factor in life, but it wasn't the indicator of where this life would head. At least, not when the soul was inside this body.
Heaven moved up and kissed him on the lips. It was a quick peck, as she knew her body wasn't prepared for another round.
"I told you on my first night here," she recalled in a knowing tone. "You better get used to it now."
"Don't change, Heaven."
"Hmm?"
"Don't go back to how you used to be." His expression was solemn, squeezing her hip as if he was afraid she would slip away. "Because this way… this version of you is someone I can reach. Also, someone I like to hold."
Heaven opened her mouth, but her voice was stuck in her throat. Those words pierced through her heart like a dagger. Although his tone was calm and seductive, it still sounded as if he was begging her.
This version of her… not the previous one.
How could he say all the right things at the right time? Words she didn't expect she would hear in this lifetime.
'You… don't know what those words mean to me.' They were the only words she needed to hear that separate her from the curse of the original Heaven.
"That's unfair," she whispered, propping her elbow against the mattress as she moved her face over him. "I was tired, but you suddenly seduced me this way. What a meanie."
Dominic chuckled as he welcomed her lips passionately, wrapping his arm around her petite body securely. And just like the other night and several minutes ago, Heaven and Dominic engaged in a passionate round as they once again became one in mind, soul, and body.
