Flat line
Everything happened so fast that barely anyone could grasp the situation. They took Paula and Manager Chu into custody, but because Paula fainted, they had to take her to the hospital. It was the same for Manager Chu because of her crash from Bear's aggressiveness.0
Since this was a huge case, the authorities executed an investigation and formed a team immediately.
However, regardless of what was happening behind the scene, Dominic's mind was all about his wife's well-being. On their way to the hospital, Heaven's vitals were very unstable. They had to resuscitate her at least twice, including this one.
"Heaven, Heaven..." Dominic called with a jagged breath, running along with the group of medical personnel as they rush Heaven to the emergency.
One doctor was on top of Heaven, pumping her chest to keep her alive.
"Please..." His eyes blurred with the thick layer of tears coating his eyes. Dominic wasn't completely aware of his wife's condition, but with how the situation was unfolding right before his eyes, he knew it was bad.
When they were almost in the emergency room, a doctor stopped and placed his hand on Dominic's chest.
"Mr. Zhu, I'm sorry, but you can't go in," said the Doctor, pressing his lips into a thin line as helplessness shone in Dominic's eyes. "Don't worry. We'll do our best to save the madam."
Dominic's neck turned taut, trying to keep his breathing consistent, but it kept skipping. He wanted to argue with the doctor, but he was still sane enough to understand their protocol. This wasn't an establishment where he could just do whatever he wanted. These people had his wife's life in their hands.
"Please... bring her back to me." His voice shook, receiving a quick smile from the doctor and a slight nod.
"We'll do our best."
The doctor didn't waste a second, turning to his colleague that was around the stretcher. He nodded at them, signaling them to go. And with that, they continued to push the stretcher inside the emergency.
Meanwhile, Dominic had to let her hand go. He received another pat from the doctor before the latter headed inside the emergency surgery room.
"Hah..." A reverberant silence rang in Dominic's ear as he gazed at the shut door, standing in front of it all alone.
His hands and clothes were still tainted with his wife's blood, but that didn't matter. All he could think of was that the doctors would bring him some good news.
"I should've... insisted that I come." Dominic swallowed the lump in his throat but to no avail. "I should've told her I wanted to spend some time together and stopped her from wasting her time with other people."
His face crumpled at the growing regret invading his mind and heart, knowing he would blame himself if something bad happened to his wife. After all, his wife was with him just an hour ago. Heaven was fine until she read Paula's message. He should've shunned her request and just selfishly monopolized her time, even when that ingrate friend of hers was trying to kill herself.
If only he did... then Paula was probably in this situation, and not Heaven.
Selfish and harsh as it sounded, but for Dominic, it was better if others got hurt instead of his wife. He never claimed to be immaculate and righteous, after all.
"God..." Dominic raised his hand and planted his palm on the door. "... please make her better. Don't take her away from me — I will not make it if you do."
"Darling..."
Little did he know, his beloved wife was just standing right next to him. Hera bit her quivering lip, eyes softening at the look on his face.
"I told you…" she whispered, touching his cheek with her fingertips. "... don't ever show that face to me because it breaks my heart."
Hera had been trying to get back into her body, especially when Heaven's body started convulsing and her vitals were going crazy. She was no professional, but she knew that much since inflicting injuries was inevitable in the underworld.
"Don't cry, darling." Another whisper slipped past her lips, trying to wipe his tears away, but to no avail. Her hand was barely passing through him, and each time this happened, the blazing light of hope seem to dim for her.
"I'm here, babe," she muttered. "Nothing will happen to me, I swear. I'll come back to you, so… so… don't be scared, hmm?"
Hera floated in front of him, unaware half of her back was within the door. She cupped his face, forcing a smile onto her face.
"I'll be back, okay?" her brows rose, nodding at him encouragingly. "I'll find a way. I promise… so don't cry, hmm?"
"Heaven…" Dominic whispered, closing his eyes ever so slowly as a tear rolled down his lean cheek. "I'll wait for you, so… come back to me."
"Yes." Hera nodded. "I'll come back… I promise…"
Hera trailed off as her teary eyes veered to the hands that were cupping his cheek. Her heart sank as her breath hitched, seeing that her fingertips looked a little more transparent. It was as if she was fading.
"No," she whispered, shaking her head mildly. "I can't die now."
Without thinking twice, Hera floated inside the emergency room to see the situation. As soon as she did, the first thing she heard was the increasing heart rate monitor and the people inside reviving her once again.
Hera stood by the door, frozen. The voices inside sounded distant as she unconsciously counted the heart rate monitor until it stopped in a single line.
"No," she whispered, shifting her attention to the people who were doing their utmost to bring her back to life.
"Clear!"
Heaven's body jolted from the bed at the shock of the defibrillator. However, her heart was still in a flatline. Thus, they had to increase the current and do it again.
"Clear!"
Beeeep…
"I think… this is farewell."
Suddenly, Hera heard Heaven's voice from her side. Hera slowly turned her head to the side, holding Heaven's gaze firmly.
"No." Hera shook her head, only to hear the most unforgivable words she heard from Heaven.
"I'm sorry."
The second those words rolled out of Heaven's tongue, everyone in the emergency room stopped. Aside from the flatline noise ringing and echoing across every corner, it was nothing but pin-drop silence.
