[Bonus chapter]Meeting the in-laws
The idea of ghosts scared Axel out of his wits. It was the reason he rarely watched horror movies. However, staring at the morgue didn't seem to scare him. If anything, he was compelled to enter, despite knowing a dead person was there. But the dead person wasn't just anyone. 1
The person inside this place was his sister.
The person who would sometimes bully him until he was crying, but also someone who would kill others if they bullied him.
Axel mustered his courage, entering the morgue to see his sister for the last time. This could be the last time he would see her face and hold her hand. That reason was enough to give him the courage to enter the place.
As soon as Axel stepped inside, his eyes fell on the person lying on the steel bed. His breath hitched, only seeing the top of her head.
"Sis," he whispered, gulping down the tension in his throat before he took another step.
After several steps, Axel stood beside her body. When his eyes fell on her face, a subtle smile appeared on his face. Strange, he thought. Aside from the dried wound on the side of her head, she looked like she was just sleeping.
"Still pretty as expected from my sis!" His lips stretched until his teeth were on full display, yet tears coated his squinting eyes. "Even when you're dead, you're still pretty! Isn't that cool?!"
A laugh slipped through his gritted teeth while tears rolled down his cheek. He poked her exposed shoulders playfully.
"Even your shoulders are still soft," he remarked before holding her hand. "Sis, are you really dead?"
The smile on his face remained, yet it wasn't enough to conceal his pain. His vision blurred, squeezing her slightly stiff hands. However, her hands weren't as hard as expected, considering she was only pronounced dead over an hour ago.
"Hey," he called along with his loud sniffle. "Sis, can you please... not die yet?"
Axel felt his knees turned as soft as tofu, wobbling to his knees until his forehead was against the steel bed she was lying on. His hand still held hers, asking her to wake up for him and telling her this wasn't a good joke.
"Sis, you really need to wake up..." Axel muttered through his gritted teeth, his snot and tears mixing on his face. "My brother is really hurt and Basti too! They... those two will fall apart without you. You are the only person keeping them together — sis, if you don't wake up, those two... will have to live the same way they did before you changed."
Axel clasped her hand even tighter. "We will all have to live the same way we did... please... please... wake up —"
Axel almost choke when the hand he was clasping tightly held him back. He jolted back a bit and then froze.
"..."
His face flooded with tears and snot was gradually replaced with horror, looking up over the steel bed. His eyes almost popped out of their sockets as they landed on the hand he was holding and was holding him back.
"Ahh!" Axel immediately released the hand and flung his hand, jumping back and slumping on his bottom. His mouth was wide open, crawling away with his butt as Heaven's hand crooked slightly.
"Hah... sis?"
His heart thudded in horror. Just now, he was crying his heart out, begging Heaven to wake up. However, now that her hand was moving, the sorrow in his heart gradually filled with dread.
"Sis?" Axel blinked as hard as he could, wiping his eyes with his arm. He then looked at her hand once again, only to see it, just like how he left it.
"Was it just my imagination?" he wondered to himself, clasping his chest as his heart rate gradually returned to normal. "Oh, lord. For a second, I remembered the phrase, be careful of what you wish for."
A deep breath escaped his mouth, looking back at where his sister was lying. He stared at it for an entire minute, waiting if Heaven would move, only to laugh when she didn't.
"Damn it. I think I'm going insane." Axel combed his hair with his fingers, pinching the bridge of his nose. "This is so stressful, sis."
He snapped his eyes back to her, sighing. "I better go and meet my parents. I'm sure Grandma is shocked by the news."
Axel could still feel his knees shaking, but he forced himself to stand up. As soon as he was back on his feet, he let out another deep exhale. This time, he didn't walk back to her side, but just gazed at her.
"Bye, sis." He smiled bitterly. "Thank you for being a part of my life."
After saying his piece, Axel turned on his heel to leave the morgue. However, just as he turned, he caught Heaven moving her hand to her head from his peripheral. Axel froze in horror once again, twisting his neck like a rusting screw.
The second his eyes landed on Heaven, his pupils instantly went wide. He wasn't seeing things. Heaven did move and was holding her head.
"Ugh…"
When a faint grunt resonated in the silent morgue, Axel gasped in fright.
"Axel, why are you so damn loud…"
Axel didn't wait for her to finish her sentence as he sprinted outside the morgue, horrified to the bones. He would never mistake her voice, nor he would mistake what he had seen. He fled as fast as he could, and as soon as he made a turn in the hallway, he caught his brother, his parents, Grandma Zhu, and a few more people at the end.
"Brother!" Axel's echoing scream immediately caught everyone's attention, turning their heads in his direction.
Deep lines appeared between Dominic's brows, seeing the terrified look plastered on Axel's face. Not just him, but everyone was either curious or upset about how loud Axel was.
"Second young master, please tone it down —" Dane abruptly stopped as Axel skidded in his step in front of Dominic.
"Brother…" All the colors on Axel's face were drained, pointing in the direction where he came from. "There… the morgue… she…"
Dominic frowned. "Axel, can you please speak properly? I don't understand a thing you say. What about the morgue?"
"No!" Axel exclaimed, clasping Dominic's suit. "Bro, sis is alive!"
Dominic's face instantly darkened at Axel's remarks. Not just him, but their parents and Grandma Zhu's expression darkened.
"Second young master, I know this is hard for you, too. However, please don't make up such stories. This is not the time for pranks." Dane frowned, displeased that Axel was being so insensitive at this moment.
"No! Brother, you have to believe me. Sis just moved and even called —"
Before Axel could finish his sentence, Dominic quickly grabbed him by the collar and pushed him against the wall.
"Axel Zhu!!" Axel flinched at his brother's roar that slightly shook. His eyes went even wider, seeing the fury burning in Dominic's eyes. "That's enough, Axel. I know this is hard for you, but don't make it even harder for me!"
A thin layer of tears coated Dominic's burning eyes. "I… am barely holding on to sanity, Axel. Do not push me over that line."
"But…" Axel clenched his teeth in distress, knowing what he was saying now didn't make sense. However, he had seen what he had seen… or was he just hallucinating? He didn't double-check as he instinctively fled out of fear.
"Please, Axel." Dominic breathed out. "Stop now."
"Uhm… what's going on?"
Suddenly, Dominic froze upon hearing a very familiar voice. His eyes slowly went wider as he caught a figure from his peripheral vision. A figure that had the same stature as his wife.
For a moment, it was pin-drop silence.
Thud!
The sound of Dane Zhang falling to his bottom snapped everyone back to reality, looking at the woman from where Axel came from, standing with only a white cloth wrapped around her upper chest down to her legs.
"Ma — young madam?" Dane gasped, now just as horrified as Axel at the person he was looking at.
Dominic's heart stopped beating for a second, turning his head to where everyone else was looking. There, at the other end of the hallway, was Heaven, looking at him with confusion.
She moved her gaze to the people with her husband and recognized all of them.
What a way to meet her in-laws.
