7:00 AM – the usual time people leave for work.
Tian Tian and I leaned against the window, watching the stream of people heading downstairs, our hearts in our throats.
The road outside the complex entrance was crowded with people waiting for the morning bus. I stared intently as a bus swerved erratically into view.
The doors opened. The driver got off, swayed unsteadily into the middle of the crowd, and collapsed. Even from this distance, I could see the bloodstains covering him.
Good Samaritans, unaware of the danger, rushed over to help. The moment they got close, he lunged and pinned one to the ground.
One young man reacted quickly, trying to pull the attacker off the victim. It was Xiao Wu, who used to live downstairs from me. He’d just graduated college this year.
I couldn’t bear to look anymore. The person Xiao Wu managed to pull off the victim was no longer human. His entire arm was ripped off, dangling grotesquely from his shoulder. Black blood gushed from a horrific wound on his neck.
Xiao Wu froze at the sight, taking a step back. But it was already too late.
The zombie sank its teeth into his shoulder. His body crumpled in a strange, unnatural way. Then, slowly, he stood back up.
Only then did people start screaming, finally realizing the danger, and stampeded back towards the complex entrance: "Murder! Monster! A monster is killing people!"
