Tian Tian leaned against the window, staring down at the horde of zombies below. "How is this possible? How did they get here?"
I took a deep breath, recalling the drone. I grabbed the remote and switched to the camera feed at our door.
The metal door to the fire escape stairwell was being pounded with violent bangs by Xu Ningyu. Yuan Jing and Old Li egged him on:
"Bro, that woman must have known something was coming. Why else would she suddenly move? And fortify the place like this?"
"Exactly! Ningyu Ge, don't let her off easy once we get in! If she hadn't taken all that lottery money, would we be living like this?"
Xu Ningyu didn’t reply. The chain lock on the stairwell door clattered to the ground. He raised his axe and advanced step by step towards our apartment door.
Tian Tian clutched my hand, her palm slick with sweat. I forced myself to stay calm.
Tian Tian and I shoved every heavy piece of furniture we could against the door. Xu Ningyu hacked at it with all his might, but the double-layered blast doors weren't going to give way easily.
The noise outside stopped. Xu Ningyu started calling my name, his voice thick with fake concern and longing, pleading with me to open the door.
If I hadn’t been reborn and witnessed his true nature firsthand, I might have fallen for it.
I walked to the window. The zombies still milled aimlessly below. Xu Ningyu’s group must have come up through the underground garage and the fire escape stairs.
I needed to lure the zombies upstairs. If they kept up this assault, the door wouldn't hold forever.
My gaze locked onto the motionless red-eyed zombie within the horde. I decided to gamble.
