Ruan Tingting whined to Xiao Chu, asking why Zhao Kai hadn't come back.
Exhausted to death, no one paid her any attention.
Sobbing, she threw herself at Qiu Ze, seeking a hug. Qiu Ze shoved her away hard and slapped her twice across the face.
"Get away from me, you cheap slut!"
Ruan Tingting collapsed to her knees, hands pressed to her reddened cheeks, looking pitiful. She scanned the faces of every man present, meeting only looks of scorn.
Drenched in sweat and near collapse, I curled up beside Chairwoman Li, drifting in and out of consciousness. Half-asleep, I fell into a warm embrace.
"Sister, rest easy. I'm here," a voice murmured.
His embrace felt like a safe harbor. My tense body softened.
Someone must have told Ruan Tingting it was me who attacked Zhao Kai.
The moment I opened my eyes, I found her staring at me with pure venom:
"Dai Mei! You murderer! Just you wait!"
"Hah. Let's see if you even live to get out," I retorted flatly.
Midnight. An odd sound came from the ventilation duct.
Could zombies be crawling in?
Unlikely, the noise wasn't loud enough for that.
In the pitch darkness, weapons at the ready, we held our breath.
It was coming!
A shadowy figure, reeking of blood and decay, landed atop the filing cabinets. Blood-red eyes glowed with a predatory light.
"Meee-OWWWW!"
It was a blood-soaked cat!
Damn it, even cats could turn?!
I quickly switched on the rechargeable lamp, grabbed my boning knife and stun baton, shielding Chairwoman Li.
It yowled and lunged at Lin Ling. Amidst the sounds of frantic hacking, the cat was chopped in half. Still dragging its front half, it tried to bite again, but the plump man brought his axe down, splitting its skull open.
"Anyone hurt?"
"No, not me."
"I'm fine."
If even one person was injured, we were all finished.
To be safe, Xiao Chu and I checked everyone thoroughly with flashlights.
Only then did I feel some measure of relief.
Ten minutes later, I went to the restroom. Xiao Chu followed me in.
